Orlando Travel Guide

Family Fun, Theme Parks & Day Trips Around Orlando

Few places pack as much family fun into one region as Central Florida. Whether you are traveling with small kids or teens, a rental car makes the long park days, snack runs and spontaneous detours far less stressful.

The theme parks

Orlando's parks are spread across the metro area, each with its own style. Driving yourself means flexible arrival times, easy mid-day breaks back at your hotel, and no surge pricing at park closing.

Walt Disney World Resort

Four major theme parks and two water parks on the southwest side of the metro. Plan for big crowds and long days — and a long but well-marked drive to the parking plazas.

Universal Orlando Resort

Multiple parks plus a water park, popular with families who have older kids and teens. Located just off International Drive.

SeaWorld & smaller parks

SeaWorld Orlando and its neighboring water park sit near I-Drive. The area also has go-kart tracks, mini-golf, an aquarium and other smaller attractions for lighter days.

Beyond the big parks

Theme parks are intense. Mixing in lower-key days keeps everyone happier — and most of these are an easy drive.

A beach day

Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast are about an hour east — an easy change of pace with wide sand and gentle Atlantic waves.

Kennedy Space Center

A full-day, all-ages attraction on the coast for budding astronauts and curious grown-ups alike.

Springs & nature parks

Clear-water springs north of the city, such as Wekiwa Springs, are a refreshing, slower-paced day surrounded by Florida nature.

Family travel tips for the parks

  • Pick the right size vehicle. Strollers, coolers and souvenir bags add up — a larger car, SUV or minivan can make park days much easier.
  • Plan a mid-day break. With your own car you can head back to nap or swim and return refreshed for the evening.
  • Bring water and shade. Florida sun is strong; a car lets you stash supplies and restock between stops.
  • Arrive early. Self-driving lets you reach the parking plazas before peak arrival traffic.
This is general information for trip planning. Park line-ups, hours and ticket details change — check each attraction's official website before your visit.

Make the most of every park day

The right vehicle gives the whole family room for strollers, gear and easy breaks. Choose your dates and find a car that fits your crew.
