Orlando Travel Guide

Getting Around Orlando Made Simple

Orlando is a spread-out, car-friendly city. Once you know how the airport, the toll roads and park parking work, driving here is straightforward. Here is what first-time visitors find most useful to know.

From the airport to your trip

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the main gateway and sits on the southeast side of the city, with quick access to the major highways.

Easy airport pickup

MCO connects directly to highways like SR 528 (the Beachline) and SR 417, so you can be on your way to the parks, I-Drive or the coast within minutes of collecting your car.

Major routes to know

I-4 is the main artery crossing the metro east–west and links most attractions. The 528, 417 and Florida's Turnpike are faster toll routes that help you skip local traffic.

Plan around rush hour

I-4 can slow down during morning and late-afternoon commutes. Leaving a little earlier or later keeps park days and drives to the coast smooth.

Tolls & parking

Two things surprise first-time visitors most: how many roads are tolled, and how parking works at the parks. Both are easy once you know what to expect.

Good to know before you drive

  • Many expressways are tolled. The 408, 417, 528 and Turnpike use electronic and cash tolls. Plan your route and keep some change handy, or check how tolls are handled on your rental.
  • Theme-park parking is paid and large. Major parks charge a daily parking fee and use enormous lots — note your row and section, and allow time for the tram or walk to the entrance.
  • Free parking exists too. Many shopping centers, lakefront parks and smaller attractions offer free lots, so not every stop adds a parking cost.
  • Use a navigation app. Live traffic routing helps you choose between the free I-4 and the faster toll roads depending on the time of day.

Typical drive times

Approximate driving times from the Orlando International Airport (MCO) area in normal traffic — useful for planning your days.

Theme-park areas

Roughly 20–40 minutes to the main park resorts and International Drive, depending on traffic and which side of the metro you are headed to.

Cocoa Beach / Space Coast

About an hour east via the Beachline (SR 528) for a beach day or the Kennedy Space Center.

Downtown & Winter Park

Around 20–30 minutes north to downtown Orlando, Lake Eola and the quieter streets of Winter Park.

Drive times and toll details are general estimates that vary with traffic and roadworks. Check a live navigation app for current conditions on the day of travel.
