Orlando Travel Guide

Things to Do in Orlando Once You Have Your Rental Car

Orlando is far more than its theme parks. With your own car you can move at your own pace — from world-famous attractions to quiet lakefront parks, shopping districts and even the Atlantic coast, all within an easy drive.

The big attractions

Orlando is home to some of the most visited attractions in the world. A rental car makes early arrivals and late departures simple — and parking lots are large and well signposted.

Theme parks

The Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando are spread across the metro area. Driving yourself lets you beat the crowds at opening and avoid rideshare surge pricing at closing.

International Drive

"I-Drive" packs entertainment complexes, mini-golf, an observation wheel, outlet shopping and dozens of restaurants into one long stretch — easy to hop between when you have wheels.

Downtown & Lake Eola

Downtown Orlando centers on Lake Eola Park, with its swan boats, walking path and weekend farmers market. Nearby neighborhoods like Thornton Park and the Mills 50 district are full of independent cafés and murals.

Shopping, dining & the outdoors

For shopping, the Orlando area has two large outlet centers on either end of International Drive, plus full-size malls such as The Florida Mall and Mall at Millenia.

Food runs the full range, from theme-park-area chains to the international restaurants of the Mills 50 and Little Saigon districts. If you prefer the outdoors, Wekiwa Springs State Park and Kelly Park offer clear-water springs and shaded trails a short drive north of the city.

Day trips worth the drive

Some of the best experiences near Orlando are an hour or two away — exactly the kind of trip a rental car is made for.

Cocoa Beach & the coast

About an hour east, Cocoa Beach and the wider Space Coast offer wide Atlantic beaches, a famous pier and a laid-back surf-town feel.

Kennedy Space Center

Also on the Space Coast, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is a full-day stop for anyone curious about rockets and space history.

Springs & small towns

Head north to natural springs, or visit nearby towns like Winter Park, with its brick streets, museums and scenic boat tour.
